As members of a network of activist videographers, we realize that we do not have the budgets and media "placement" resources of a big PR firm, such as Burson-Marsteller (responsible for the "Perception Management" of such debacles as the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.) That is why we support the tart tossers of the world. Traditional, more accepted forms of protest (such as letter-writing, picketing, protest marching) aren't so effective without large numbers. We live in a time of rapid change and mismanaged crisis. Influential entities of the status quo have insulated themselves from any form of popular check or balance. Messages and slogans of well-meaning activists have been co-opted, marginalized or simply ignored.

The creamy critiques and pielitical pressure of the Biotic Baking Brigade are direct, visually pleasing and funny. Even the corporate-owned media is compelled to report on pie incidents and to take advantage of the popularity of the image of full facial entartement. All tactics need to be deployed in the struggle to free jaded workers everywhere . . . from the nightmare of mind-controlled consumerism and aquiescence. Let the pie's fly!

After the mayoral pie-ing of his willyness, AP stories appeared in Turkey, on the subject of Homelessness in San Francisco. The concern over untested and unlabelled genetically modified foods has lead communities the world over to take all maner of actions to stop corporations like Monsanto from radically altering their staple crops forever. Crops of the infamous terminator-seed have been burned by local farmers in India. Massive "crop-pulls" have occured in England. And, the CEO of Monsanto got a taste of tofu cream on a recent visit to San Francisco. The phrase, "genetic engineering" was subsequently used to describe the activities of Monsanto - in print and electronic media throughout the world. This was especially new and unique coverage in the United States, where the issues of geneticly modified foods and chemically-intensive farming mehtods have been largely ignored by the american press.

The Biotic Baking Brigade is dedicated to breaking the corporate media spell by using PIE. When a pie flies in the face of a rich, unnaccountable figure - an archetypal message has been sent. The pie is a visual esparanto for the working class; a comedic device - the thin end of a wedge for spreading the repressed information of our times.

Recently, the head of the International Monetary Fund, Michel Camdessus, joins neoliberal economist Milton Friedman and the former head of the World Trade Organization as those who have been tried and pied. Emporers wear no clothes, but they look great in tufts of cream. We are blessed to behold a truely global pastry uprising and, as Rahula Janowski, of the Cherry-Pie Three / San Francisco's Mayoral Pie-ers, says, "Anybody with a pie and a vision of a better world can become a member of the Biotic Baking Brigade."
